Based in Loreto, Peru, Aqua Expeditions is the fulfillment of CEO Francesco Galli Zugaro's long-time ambition. Previous experience working with a Galapagos Islands tour company gave him the experience and expertise he needed to found Aqua Expeditions and introduce passengers to the remote region of Peru's Amazon River.

Founded in 2007, the two-ship line operates year-round, sailing three-, four- and seven-night cruises from Iquitos. Committed to sustainable tourism, the company has vowed to leave as small a footprint as possible while introducing visitors to the Amazonia people, culture, rainforest, jungle and wildlife of the region. Its practices include careful monitoring of emissions, waste management and fuel efficiency, as well as safe-food and water-purification protocols. 

The two boats feature suites that could be found on much larger sea-going vessels. Staterooms average 230-240 square feet and include flat-screen TVs, sitting areas and in-suite baths. The boats are fully air-conditioned but have no radio, cell-phone or Internet access. (There is a satellite phone for emergencies.) The lounges do, however, have DVDs and a flat-screen television. Small DVD players are also available to borrow for in-suite use.

Public rooms include an indoor bar and lounge, an observation deck, an outdoor lounge, a boutique and a dining room. Meals are prepared with local ingredients and a Peruvian flare; South American wines are included with supper. Naturalists onboard speak English; daily excursions are included.
